Determining if your Windshield can be Repaired vs. Replaced
When a repair is made to your windshield, the process includes filling the break with resin that cures and stops any additional cracking. Replacing the windshield involves removing the entire windshield and installing a replacement windshield.
Two main factors help us determine whether your Chevrolet windshield can be repaired or will need to be replaced entirely. These factors are the size of the damage and the location of the damage.
Size of the Damage
Our experts will talk with you once the windshield damage is assessed. Any cracks shorter than 3 inches and rock chips larger than the circumference of a quarter will result in the windshield needing to be replaced. If your auto glass damage is smaller than this, we can likely make a quick repair, depending on where the damage is located.
Location of the Damage
While any chip smaller than a quarter or crack shorter than 3 inches can usually be repaired, we also need to look at where the damage is located on the windshield. Damage is more likely to spread when located toward the edge of the glass. If this is the case with your Chevy, we might have to recommend replacing the windshield.
Sometimes the crack or chip is located directly within the driver’s line of sight. If that’s the case, we’ll always replace it. The reason is that the repair process leaves behind a small distortion in the glass, and that can be dangerous.
