The importance of your windshield is sometimes overlooked (ironic, huh?). The most obvious reason why the windshield is important is the ability to see the road clearly. Visibility is the most important aspect of driving safely.
What you may not realize is that your windshield provides a significant amount of strength to the structural support in the cabin of the vehicle. According to the Auto Glass Safety Council (AGSC), in a front-end collision, the front windshield provides up to 45% of the structural integrity of the cabin of the vehicle, and in a rollover, up to 60%.

The AGSC states that the windshield is an integral part of the safety restraint system in your car. It keeps the roof from crushing in on you in a rollover, and it allows airbags to deploy in the correct position to cushion passengers. This prevents you and your family from being ejected from the vehicle in a serious accident.
When is it a repair and when does it need to be replaced?
Chips on your windshield can easily evolve into cracks due to potholes, hot or cold temperatures, or other weather or road conditions. Any chip that is smaller than a quarter or not in your line of sight and not on the edge of the windshield can very possibly be repaired. Anything larger than a quarter or in the direct line of sight will need to be replaced.
